Welcome to the JDLA Photography FAQ! We’ve answered the most common questions about booking your fine-art maternity, newborn, and baby milestone sessions at our Woodland Hills studio. Serving Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, and Ventura County, our goal is to provide a fully styled, stress-free photography experience for your growing family.
When should I schedule my Los Angeles newborn photography session?
It is best to book your newborn session while you are still pregnant to guarantee your spot on our calendar. Because babies rarely arrive on their exact due date, we take a limited number of bookings each month to keep our schedule flexible. Once you book, simply notify us within 24 to 48 hours of your baby's arrival so we can lock in the exact date for your studio session.
When is the best time to schedule a maternity photoshoot?
We recommend scheduling your maternity session when you are between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant. During this time, your bump is beautifully round, but you will likely still be comfortable enough to move around and pose effortlessly.
What if my baby arrives earlier or later than their due date?
Don't worry! This is exactly why we limit our monthly bookings. Whether your little one arrives a few weeks early or decides to take their time, your spot on our calendar is guaranteed and we will adjust your session date accordingly.
What is the "Golden Window" for newborn photos?
The ideal timeframe for newborn photography is when your baby is between 5 and 12 days old. During this "golden window," babies are typically in a deep sleep and still enjoy curling up into those sweet, womb-like poses that make for beautiful portraits.
What do I need to bring to the newborn photoshoot?
Our Woodland Hills home studio is a full-service experience, meaning you hardly need to pack a thing! We provide all of the newborn outfits, delicate wraps, professional props, and custom backdrops. All you need to bring is your baby, plenty of milk (formula or breastmilk for feedings and comfort), and up to one or two personal props if you have a special heirloom you'd like included.
Are parent and sibling photos included in the newborn session?
Yes! We believe capturing the whole family is incredibly important. Parent and older sibling poses are included in your newborn session at no additional cost.
Is your studio safe for delicate newborns?
Infant safety is our highest priority. With experience photographing over 200 newborns, we are well-versed in safe handling and posing techniques (often earning the nickname "The Baby Whisperer" from our clients!). The studio is deeply sanitized between sessions, and we are fully up-to-date on all vaccinations, including Tdap and Covid-19.
Do I need to buy a dress for my maternity session?
No shopping required! We want your experience to be as stress-free as possible. We offer a curated client closet full of beautiful, high-quality maternity gowns and fabrics that you are welcome to wear during your session.
Can I add professional hair and makeup to my maternity package?
Absolutely. If you want to feel completely pampered, professional hair and makeup services can be added to your maternity session for $250.
Who can I include in my maternity photos?
Your partner and any older children are more than welcome to participate in your maternity session at no additional cost.
When should I book baby milestone or sitter sessions?
- We love capturing your baby’s first year! We offer milestone sessions for the following stages:
- Tummy Time (3–4 months): When baby is lifting their head and showing big smiles.
- Sitter Session (6–9 months): The absolute best age to photograph! We capture them once they are sitting up completely unassisted but before they start walking.
- First Birthday: Celebrating their big milestone, usually scheduled around 11–12 months of age.
What is included in a Cake Smash Session?
Our First Birthday Cake Smash sessions are fully custom-styled. We provide the wardrobe (for sizes 6-12 months), a beautifully designed balloon garland, and a naked cake to match your chosen theme. If you prefer not to include a cake, just let us know!
How many photos will I receive?
A few days after your session, you will receive a digital proofing gallery of the unedited images. From there, you will select your final favorites based on the number of images included in your specific package (typically 8 or more). If you fall in love with more photos, you always have the option to purchase additional digital images!
How long does it take to receive my final edited photo gallery?
Once you submit your final selections, our professional hand-retouching process takes about 2 to 3 weeks. Every selected image is carefully edited to remove temporary blemishes and ensure smooth, consistent skin tones. Your final polished gallery is delivered directly to you via high-resolution digital download.
Where is the JDLA Photography studio located?
Our cozy, fully equipped home studio is located in Woodland Hills, CA, designed specifically to keep families comfortable and relaxed during their sessions.
